Skilled Nursing Care for Children With Seizures

Continuous, professional nursing is the foundation of safe care for any child with active seizures. At Blessed Pediatric Care, every operating hour is staffed by Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and pediatric trained caregivers — all trained in seizure observation, rescue medication administration, and emergency response.

What Skilled Nursing Means in a PPEC Setting

Florida defines Prescribed Pediatric Extended Care as a non-residential medical service for medically complex children that delivers nursing care exceeding what a parent or caregiver can routinely provide at home. In practice this means: a Registered Nurse on duty at all times, physician orders driving every intervention, eMAR documentation of every medication, and direct accountability to the child's treating physicians and to Florida's Agency for Health Care Administration.

For children with seizures, skilled nursing is not a luxury. It is the difference between a brief, well-managed event documented in real time and a missed seizure that delays urgent medication changes — or worse, a prolonged seizure without timely rescue medication.

    Seizure Observation and Documentation

Every observed seizure at Blessed Pediatric Care is documented with clinical precision: time of onset, semiology, level of consciousness, motor involvement, autonomic features, duration, oxygen saturation, post-ictal recovery time, and any rescue medication given. These notes are timestamped, signed by the responding RN, and transmitted to the family the same day along with the treating neurologist's office.

Over weeks and months this generates a seizure log far richer than any parent diary — and it is one of the most frequent reasons our neurology partners cite for changing or simplifying a child's medication regimen.

    Rescue Medication, Suction, and Oxygen

Intranasal midazolam (Nayzilam, Valtoco), rectal diazepam (Diastat), and buccal midazolam are all routinely administered by our Registered Nurses per physician order. Bedside suction, supplemental oxygen, and pulse oximetry are available throughout the facility. Every clinical nurse on staff maintains current PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) and BLS certifications.

    Medication Administration Through the Day

Children with seizure disorders frequently take three to five scheduled medications each weekday, often with strict timing relative to meals and feeds. Blessed Pediatric Care administers every dose under RN or LPN supervision, with double-check verification on high-alert medications, and reconciles physician orders against the eMAR at the start of every shift.

This eliminates the most common cause of breakthrough seizures we see at admission — missed or mistimed doses during the working day.

When Nursing Coordinates With the Hospital

If a child requires emergency department evaluation or inpatient admission, our nursing team transmits the most recent medication list, seizure log, vital sign trends, and rescue medication record to the receiving facility. After discharge, we obtain the updated orders and resume care without a gap.

Blessed Pediatric Care serves families across Miami-Dade and Broward County from our Miami Gardens facility at 4715 NW 157th St, including Miami, Hialeah, Opa-Locka, North Miami, Miami Lakes, Aventura, Doral, Hollywood, Hallandale Beach, Pembroke Pines and Miramar.
